Storage Tips: How To Protect Your Wooden Dinette Set

by Claude Medina

Storing is not just about throwing things in your unit without carefully planning things out. This is especially true if you are going to store your belongings for a long time. The following is a guide that will help you store your wooden dinette set properly and safely in your storage unit.

How Improper Storage Can Damage Your Set

The following are just a few reasons why you need to take extra care when storing your wooden set:

  • Moisture can seriously damage your wooden table and chairs; this will encourage mold.
  • Humidity will only make matters worse, combining moisture and warmth;  this is the perfect environment for mold and mildew overgrowth..
  • Insects may also be attracted to the smell of damp wood. The insects feed on the wood and use it for warmth. You may have an infestation by the time you get back to your unit.
  • Sunlight will discolor your wooden set as well. And heat could warp the wood in your wooden furniture.

So as you can see, there are few things that you need to worry about when storing your table set. But these helpful tips, the right storage unit, and your storage specialist have the power to protect your wooden pieces.

Tips To Protect Your Furniture

The following are a number of tips you can follow to protect your furniture when you store them:

  1. Disassemble your table and chairs. Place the screws in separate and labeled plastic bags. Doing this will help transport and store your wooden furniture. This will also give you more space.
  2. You should clean your furniture with mild soap and water. Or, you can use wood-safe soap to make sure there is no faint smells or food particles that would attract insects to your furniture.
  3. Treat your wooden pieces with a wax coating to keep it moisturized and safe from humidity.
  4. Place a wooden pallet or piece of plastic on the floor of your storage. You want to place your wooden furniture pieces over that to keep it from the floor, which is prone to contain some moisture.
  5. Make sure that the storage unit does not get any sunlight and that it is climate controlled to protect your items from moisture.
  6. You can also spray a homemade cedar oil mixture onto your furniture, as cedar oil will repel termites. Some scientists found that some termites find cedar poisonous. To make your spray, just add 10 to 15 drops into one cup of water. Add that mixture into a spray bottle. Spray just a little over your furniture.

As you can see, protecting your wooden pieces only takes a little preparation. Storage facility managers, such as the ones you might find at Ten Mile Storage and Cloverdale Storage, can talk with you about other things you can do to protect your furniture.
