If you are planning to build a cabin in the woods to stay in while you are hunting, you have many things to think about from how large you want the cabin to be to how you heat it. Below are two of these things to help you get started. This will ensure you have a cabin that stays in good condition and that you stay warm in.
Heat
There are many options of heating the cabin. If you want to go with electric, you can install baseboard heating in each room. This is beneficial because you can change the temperature in each individual room. For example, you may want it hotter in the living room but cooler in the bedroom. Along with the electric baseboard heating you can install a wood or electric fireplace for even more heat.
If you do not want to go with electric heating, you can choose propane heating instead. You can install a vented propane furnace and have a propane cook stove. If you do not want to deal with a large propane tank, consider using two propane tanks with a double hook up. This way, if one tank runs out of propane, you can turn off the empty tank and turn the full tank on. Unhook the empty tank and take it into town to have refilled. You will never have to worry about going without heat. For more information or assistance, contact companies like Sunrise Cooperative Inc.
Roof
Roofing a hunting cabin is a little different than roofing a home. This is mainly because there are many critters that will try to get into the cabin during the cold weather while you are away. Make sure you only use as many roof vents as you must have and they should all have a secure screen on them.
Critters like rafter eaves so do not have open rafters at the eaves and that the rafters are closed tightly. Make sure you keep debris out of the gutters and the downspouts direct water away from your cabin. If the gutters are full of debris the water has nowhere to go so it will get under your roof and into your cabin.
If the cabin has a metal roof, caulk the edge of the roof to avoid ice dams. If you do not do this and an ice dam builds up from the gutter, the water will get under the roof. If the water freezes, it can rip the roof off the cabin.
Talk with the builder about these things. They will also have other suggestions to help keep you safe and warm during the winter months.
