A Guide To Your Malfunctioning Electric Hot Water Heater During The Winter

by Claude Medina

When short days and cold nights manifest each year, it can be quite challenging to get and stay comfortably warm in the privacy of your own home. That can be particularly problematic in the bathroom, given the cool tile commonly found in that room. Unfortunately, it could seem even worse when the long, hot shower you were looking forward to winds up being a short, lukewarm or cold shower due to an issue with your water heater. Therefore, it is a good idea for every homeowner to be familiar with the following information about their electric water heater prior to attempting any trouble-shooting or repairs on the unit.

Be Sure To Adjust The Temperature Of The Hot Water Heater To A Usable Safe Temperature When It Gets Cold Outside

It is important to note that when it gets cold outside, your hot water heater will need to work a bit harder to keep its contents at the comfortable temperature that you selected. It is a simple matter of hot water losing some its heat because it is running through cold pipes before being used. That means that if your hot water heater was working fine and now the water does not seem to get or stay at the same temperature, one option for troubleshooting it is to simply adjust the hot water heater up by a few degrees. Be sure to always turn off the electric water heater and verify that the water is cool prior to inspecting or working on the unit.

However, if you have children, senior citizens, or anyone with nerve damage in the home, it is crucial to be very careful when setting the thermostat. That is due to the fact those people might not realize that the water had gotten too hot until they had been burned. The Mayo Clinic has recommended that the thermostat on a hot water heater should not be set above 120 degrees Fahrenheit.when kids are in the home.

Know When Flushing The Hot Water Is Necessary

If you have recently noticed that the hot water heater takes longer than it used to fill the tank again after its first tank was used, one possible culprit is the build up of sediment within the take. That sediment can increase your costs of using the hot water heater, because the sediment will need to be heated along with the water in the tank. Its presence will also cause it to take longer to heat the water and could even damage the heating elements. l

Fortunately, flushing the tank is a relatively easy task. You will first need to find a protruding nozzle on the top of hot water heater. It is known as the drain valve and you will need to connect an ordinary garden hose to it. After finding an area to rain the water and sediment in the tank to, like a bathtub or even a child's pool, you will need to turn off all of the valves except the cold water inlet, as that one needs to be completely open. Turn on the hose and watch for the draining water. When it runs clear for at least a minute or two, the sediment has been flushed and it is safe to return everything to its normal condition and allowing the tank to have clean, sanitary water within the tank.

In conclusion,  the need for quick and accurate water heater repair is a common occurrence that most homeowners will experience at some time. Therefore, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the information provided above before a problem happens, so that you will know what to do if and when the situation occurs.
