Mistakes To Avoid Making During A Staffing Agency Interview

by Claude Medina

Signing on with a staffing agency can get you one step closer to obtaining the employment you desire. Before you get a chance to sit down for an interview with a potential employer, however, you'll need to appear employable enough for the staffing agency to want to hire you. This means that you'll not only need valuable content in your resume, but that you'll need to successfully pass an introductory interview. During this conversation, a staffing agency representative will ask you a series of employment-related questions that will help ascertain whether you're a proper fit for the employment staffing services company. You can improve your chances of obtaining representation by avoiding these mistakes.

Speaking Poorly About A Previous Employer

You'll likely be asked about any previous permanent or contract positions that you've held, as well as why you left them. This is a time to be as professional as possible, rather than necessarily be 100 percent truthful. For example, if you left a previous staffing agency because you had personality clashes with your rep, it's a bad idea to speak poorly about him or her. Instead, you should say that you were looking for a fresh opportunity or something comparable.

Making Yourself Sound Invincible

There's no harm in saying where your strengths lie and the areas in which you need to improve. When your staffing agency rep asks questions about your strengths and weaknesses, don't grade yourself an A+ in every category and say that you have no weaknesses. It's fine to tell your rep where you want to improve — this doesn't mean that the agency won't represent you. Instead, it means that your rep will have a clear idea of your skills so that he or she can place you in the right employment position. You don't want to exaggerate your way through this interview, only to find yourself in a position that exceeds your capabilities.

Looking Too Far Ahead

It's common for staffing agencies to set new clients up with short-term contracts. This will allow the agency to assess your performance and potentially look for longer-term contracts for you in the future. Don't appear in a hurry to move to longer (and higher-paying) contracts right away. This may suggest that you won't be taking your early contract seriously, which could result in unneeded headaches for your agency rep. This concern, in turn, could cause the agency to decline to represent you.
