When a consumer first looks at a product, the first thing they often focus on is its label. For this reason, having a good product label is crucial, not matter what type of product you're offering. Unfortunately, there are a number of common mistakes that prevent people from accomplishing this goal. Here are just some of the mistakes you want to avoid.
Poor Color Selection
Consumers are all about appearance. Sure, they want a product that functions well, but they also want a product that looks appealing. If you want to create an appealing label, ensure the colors you use as part of the product labeling coincides with the color scheme of your packaging.
If the two don't match, this can be unattractive. While you don't have to use the exact same colors, you do want to choose colors that at least complement each other, such as those in the same hue or that create a good contrast.
Choosing The Wrong Material
Make sure you are choosing the right material for the product label. For the best result, the label material should work well with type of product you are creating the label for. For instance, if you are creating a label for a liquid-based product, a label that is waterproof is critical. Without this type of material, the label simply won't last.
In addition to the actual product, keep in mind that the temperature in the area where the product should be housed, how it's shipped and even where it will be used all should be contributing factors when it comes to determining which type of label material is best.
Poor UPC Placement
During the design process, don't forget to consider the placement of the UPC code. Poor placement will lead to problems for the retailers that will sell your products in the future.
Some of the more common placement mistakes is printing the label in an area that is hard to position over the scanner, printing it too small or using an ink color that doesn't provide a strong enough contrast for a scanner to easily pick it up. Once you have the layout planned, simulate the process of using the label with a barcode scanner to ensures its placement is accurate.
A good product label is just as important as a good product. Take your time and choose a design layout that is going to best showcase your product.
