Tips For Choosing A Self Storage Facility And Unit

by Claude Medina

Are you planning to declutter your home or are otherwise in need of a self storage unit? Are you getting confused by all of the options available out there and you aren't sure how to pick a storage unit or even a location? Storing things is a great way to keep your home cleaner while keeping your items safe. But deciding exactly where to keep your stuff can sometimes be a difficult decision. In order to help you choose between different units, here are some things to consider:

Reason for storage: The reason for storing items can play a huge part not only in what facility you pick but also what unit in the facility that you choose. If you are looking for a location to keep your items safe from seasonal flooding, you may want to make sure that the facility you choose is in a different flood plain than your house. This may mean that you'll need to use a facility some distance away from your home. If you're using the self storage unit to keep seasonal decorations, some of which may be heavy, you probably want a unit that is either on the ground floor or is near an elevator. You'll want to avoid one that is accessible only by stairs.

Items being stored: If you're planning on using your self storage unit to keep furniture, you're going to need a much larger unit than if you're storing the equivalent volume of boxes. For example, most couches should be stored as they would be used, not standing on end, lest they be damaged. For larger couches, this means that you'll need at least a 5x8 storage room. On the other hand, a couch-sized stack of boxes can be stacked in many different configurations. You may only need something like a 3x5 or 5x5 unit to keep these boxes.

Materials being stored: The materials that the items are made out of make a difference as to whether or not you need climate control for your self storage unit. Furniture should usually be kept in a climate controlled unit, especially if you're keeping it there for more than a month. Too much variation in temperature and humidity can permanently warp items made out of wood. On the other hand, things like exterior holiday decorations, papers, and excess clothing can be just fine in a unit that has no climate control.
